Ph1 to Ph2 Rear Light Conversion
What You Will Need
# Drivers rear lamp
# Passenger rear lamp
# The later style connectors.
# Electrical crimps.
# Possibly voltage tester
# Various electrical connectors
# Spare fuses
Sourcing the Parts
The best way to obtain these parts is from a local scrap yard as you will not only need the light units and bulb holders, but also the wiring that goes with them. This can take two forms, you can either just take the actual connectors with as much wiring loom as you can, or the way that I did which was disconnect the passenger side connector, work out which wires run across the back of the car in the small auxiliary loom and keep these attached to the connector.
It is then just a case of pulling the wires through the bodywork and out on the driver’s side by the rear light.
This saves a bit of time and also looks a lot neater.
Fitting
Start off working on the passenger side (left hand light), you need to remove the old lamp unit; this is held in place by 2 thumbscrews.
Disconnect the original wiring loom.
You now need the bit of loom descried above or one of the two connectors.
You now need to feed the small bit of loom across the back of the car, with a bit of trouble it will follow across in side the original box section and look factory fit.
Join the wires as follows:
Pin Number Wire Number Colour Function
1 V093 Yellow Tail
2 Not Used - -
3 2021 Brown Fog
4 221 Brown Reverse
5 M201 Green/Yellow Earth
6 2335 Yellow Indicator
7 213A Yellow Stop
The earth wire from number 5 also connects in the wire for the number plate light and the green wire for the number plate connects to pin 1, tail light.
You can now put the new light in and make sure that all lights work as they should.
Off the back of the drivers side unit you will find the following wires that need connecting:
Colour Number Connect To Colour
Yellow 213 213A Yellow
Yellow V091 V093 Yellow
Yellow 2333 2335 Yellow
Green M202 M201 Green
On the right hand light you need to connect up as follows:
Pin Number Wire Number Colour Function
1 212 Red Stop
2 2343 Red Indicator
3 M200 Green Earth
4 221 Brown Reverse
5 2021 Brown fog
6 Not Used - -
7 V042 Red Tail
Pin 4 will also connect in to the purple wire
Pin 5 will also connect in to brown wire 202
You can now connect up the driver’s side lamp and check that all lights work as they should.
During this operation you can also put a new bulb in the spare holder for the fog lamp, this way you get a fog lamp on each side rather than just on one side.
I also took this opportunity to fit a high level brake light from a later phase car. All of the mounts are in the boot lid. It is just a case of drilling the holes out and screwing the lamp unit on, then feed the wires down to the passenger light and connect up to the relevant pins.
