racermike wrote:ive looked at that took two bolts out then went ot the next one and theres no chance of getting the socket or spanner on it theres just no the room from the bolt coz the manifold comes back on it self across all the bolts.
same as on the cat bolt coz above the head of the bolt on the one side the manifold comes straight over the top of it and even a small 1/4" 10mm socket wont fit in the gap. the other side was ok coz the manifold runs away not straight over the bolt head.
strange as mine has a bigger manifold and theres pleanty of room, i jam the spanner up against the tunnel/bulkhead on the head of the bolt then use a ratchet and a few extension bars on to the bottom nut
Re: GTI6 engine conversion

Re: GTI6 engine conversion
Seen as the rained stopped this afternoon and i didnt have much on afterwork today. I done an hour or two on the car this evening.
Decided to sort my small rust problem on the chassis. After a wire brushing by hand and a drill, sanding back quite a lot until i got rid of the rust back to the metal. I then applied a zinc rich rust resistant primer on to the areas i had taken back to the metal.
Then rubbed it down with some 1200gauge and gave it another coat.
Now looks like this.
I was looking around the engine bay and couldnt see any other ares of rust so hopefull thats about it.There are a couple of brackets that do need some attention but think its all rust free.

Re: GTI6 engine conversion
haha day off tomoz and saturday. may av a hand with a forklift saturday morning to lift it out. save borrowing the engine lift from the garage.
Hopefully a few dry evenings next week so i can rub the engine bay down and spray it. might spray the sub frame with some hammerite aswell. then got to remove the interior and drop the gear lever.
Im off all next weekend so if i can gt down to the garage i will start taking the engine out of the gti6.

Re: GTI6 engine conversion
couple of hours work today after it stopped raining long enough.
Thought id sort out my slam panel as the paint was flaking off and looked a mess.
This is what it was like when i started.
After going over the rust with a wire brush on the drill taking it back to metal. I then went over the slam panel with wet and dry till it was smooth enough and finally washed it down.
After it was dry i went over it with rust resistant primer.
btw i have done both sides of the slam panel.
I didnt realise i got quite a bit of stuff that needs cleaning up for when it is fitted back on. so there could be a few of these little posts on various parts im refubing.

I painted the fans not so long ago just b4 fcs but didnt do all the surround as i cldnt get to it so while it was off i have sprayed all the fan housing.
Air con rad wasnt up to standard so went about tidying this up next.
(before)
after cleaning it up with wire wool and wet and dry. i then painted it with silver engine paint.

Re: GTI6 engine conversion
Next was the radiator which reli needs replacing with a nissens aluminium one which i will do after this winter so its in for next summer. But for now just wanted to tidy it up.
(before)
(after)
didnt want to go over the top on the rad as theres not a lot of point if im going to replace it just enough to tidy it up for nw reli and put some hammerite on the metal on the top and bottom to preserve it for the time bein.

Re: GTI6 engine conversion
Ok so terry and a mate came down to the garage this morning to help me remove the gti6 engine.
started bout 10am ish and was all done by bout 2.30. A lot of the time was goin on trying to move the car off the grass onto the concrete work area. so after changing the flat wheel for another one and putting a tow rope on the front and pulling it out of the field while steering it with no wheel just a pair of grips inside eventually got it onto the concrete.
so it started like this mess...
ended up in this mess...
but with this out.....
great thanks to terry and his mate in the 309 with all the help this morning.
